Easter 2009

by Brooke on April 21, 2009

Another Easter has come and gone. I really love this time of year. It’s strange to think that just last Easter (it was in March) I was pregnant with Haylie. I’m constantly amazed with how fast time goes. And how the kids are growing. So I get out my camera and try to freeze time for just a moment. :)
This Easter was full of fun and traditions. We did the fun but freezing neighborhood Easter egg hunt (we have an awesome ‘hood) during the week, and the always amazing BBQ and egg hunt with Grandma and Grandpa S. and the whole fam. I didn’t take a ton of pictures, too busy hunting for eggs and trying not to freeze.
And of course, we colored eggs.
(Brandon’s glasses were a bit broken that weekend, but they’re fixed now–hence the lack of spectacles in these pics.) It’s always fun to see the squiggly designs the kids come up with. It’s hard to know with the invisible white crayon!!! :) Oh, and we didn’t really comb Annie’s hair that morning.

Even Haylie got in on the action a little bit. She wanted to throw the egg.

More serious egg designing.

We get all EGG-cited when they start to get their fun colors. Get it? Ha ha ha ha…..

I used a simple recipe for the dye:
1 cup water
1 T. vinegar
20 drops of food coloring
Anyway, more excitement with coloring eggs shall commence.
Somebody got sunburned while skiing.

This was NOT scripted. Annie was so excited to watch the egg turn red.

It was fun and pretty and only slightly messy. See, I was there, you can see my fingertips holding the spoon.

I love the bright colors. Of the eggs, not Jaden’s poor red face. :) Even if our house and fridge did stink a little bit. From the eggs, not Jaden’s poor red face. But I do love his face, it’s a cute one.

Easter Sunday was gorgeous. You can tell by these gorgeous just-got-out-of-bed pictures. Annie’s morning ‘fro is legendary.

If I was more on top of things, I would’ve liked to have done the Easter baskets on Saturday morning, just so Easter Sunday wouldn’t be as crazy and we can focus on the real reason we celebrate. Maybe next year I can be more on the ball. We don’t really emphasize the whole Easter Bunny aspect of Easter anyway.
Because if you really think about it, the thought of a giant sized rabbit sneaking into your house in the middle of the night bearing stinky eggs and chocolate and random toys is a very frightening and somewhat disturbing thing to me!!! Who invented that??? We were talking with the kids about how we celebrate Easter because Jesus was resurrected. Brandon raised a very good question–“Why do we look for eggs on Easter? Who decided that? Is it so we can also look for Jesus?” I liked that idea.
Anyway, the kids did have fun looking for their hidden baskets.

The ‘fro has its own weather system.

Ahhhh, Haylie’s first Easter! She loved throwing the grass. And was happy with the little goodies in her basket. :) Look at that cute little chick in her chickie jammies!!

After 1,000 shots, I got one decent picture of all three of them happy in their Easter finery. Oh, I think they are adorable. I love Easter outfits. And the kids wearing them. :)

Church was great–the talks were spiritually uplifting and the choir sang a beautiful rendition of “I Stand All Amazed” by Sally DeFord and I was the accompanist. It is such a gorgeous piano accompaniment and one of my favorites.

And I’m grateful for the knowledge that because Christ’s Atonement and resurrection, my little family can be eternal.

We had a delicious dinner at my parents’ place and enjoyed treats and visits with both of our families through the night. We love our families. We’re lucky they live so close together too, so we can spend time with both sides.

I always love my mom’s tables…and the orange tulips!!!
For family night, we did another tradition that goes way back to when I was a little girl. We’d have Easter dinner at my grandma’s with cousins and aunts and uncles, and we’d always read the Easter story with the plastic eggs with the scriptures and little symbols inside. Then when I was 12, we made our own Easter story eggs in Young Women, for us to use with our own kids when we grew up.
So that’s what we did! Using my “vintage” eggs.

While much of it was a little bit over their heads, it was still nice to sit as a little family and talk about Jesus together. The last egg is empty because the tomb was empty–Christ lives.

Happy Easter! Happy Spring!

Yay for Easter pics! It looks like you had a great holiday. I have never heard of that tradition with the scriptures in the eggs – will you send me a copy? I would love to start that tradition with Cash.

Ahhh, thanks for the sweet comments! I’m going to try to answer questions/comments more here in the comment section.
Ems–love the old egg story tradition. When is your baby coming out?? :)

Jamamama–I use a Canon Rebel XTi. I love it. My favorite lens and the one I use the most is the Canon 50mm 1.8.

Meags–I’ll see what I can do. :)

Rachel–Glad you delurked! Yay! :) Yeah, those dresses are from the Gymboree outlet I believe (they were from grandma). I LOVE them. I wish I had one in my size! :)

Such cute pics–you are a very talented photographer :) So I have to take back what I said to you last night–because I was corrected at the register. Apparently Albies does not price match–even though I swear they did it in Lehi. So there’s my disclaimer. Say hi to the fam–and see you this week for the hot hot sale :)

I just couldn’t see this blog and not comment on your cute Annie’s hair do. If we woke up at the same time one morning, we would have matching fro’s!! :) So funny. Of course my kids hair is pin straight. Go figure. The one thing Annie has going for her is styling product!! Ha Ha. I’m not sure my mother knew what to do with mine at that age, I looked like Annie’s morning hair all day long! :)

I would also love a copy of your Scripture Egg Story if you wouldn’t mind. That sounds like a great tradition to start:)
