Rainy Day Survival

by Brooke on June 6, 2008

The last few days have been cold and wet. So we’ve been trying to do a few fun things to keep from going insane–especially since Jaden was out of town for 3 days! Movies, “popcorn picnics” in the family room, playing with every toy, watching home videos, playing with friends, making puppets and going to lunch with Grandmas, etc etc etc. Yesterday Julie and the crew came over and we decided to be brave, cool, fun moms and whip out the finger paint. Thanks Erin for the inspiration! :)

Jazz Hands! Spirit Fingers!!

It was messy fun. And a quick clean up, which was nice. Now we have about 50 “masterpieces” all over my kitchen! :)

Once the paint was put away, we got out the Floam. Have you seen this? It’s fabulous, cleaner than playdough, doesn’t dry up, doesn’t get everywhere, and it feels like gooey rice krispie treats in your hands but it’s not sticky or slimy! And it molds into whatever shape you want. The kids played with this stuff for a long time. My mom got it for the kids for Christmas at The Red Balloon, in case you wanted to grab some. It’s lots of fun.

After running around and playing in the basement, they were ready for some brownies. And so were Julie and I. :) It sure made the rainy day go by faster!

Brandon is still in school until the 13th, crazy! It’s great. But I’m going to need some fun, cheap ideas to keep kids (and Mom) happy this summer. I’d love some suggestions from all you fun people out there so please feel free to leave me some comments!!!

I’ll be the first to say that water guns, water balloons, slip and slides, and any outdoor water toys are so fun. I like it cause I can just sit with a book while the kids go wild. Also, a not so wet idea is to give the kids spray bottles and tell them to water stuff. Another (yes I like to be outside) is to give them a plastic cup of water and a paint brush and they can paint the driveway and sidewalks. Hope this works!

My kids love squirt bottles and “painting” with water too. I LOVE that Jazz hands picture of Brandon and Halle! Such a perfect capturing of the moment.

We spent $15 at the dollar store and bought sponges to make boats to float in the tub, straws for hooking together and making buildings, pipe cleaners and aluminum foil for sculptures, shaving cream for painting on the counter top, balloons for indoor volleyball and golf, marshmallows and toothpicks for making cubes and pyramids…I can’t remember everything, but I got it all for about $15. I’m definitely going to have to get some of that Floam. My kids beg for it every time it’s advertised on tv. I’ll have to try the fingerpainting too. They’d love that!

I LOVE floam, too! We also got some for Christmas & I think it’s much more fun than play-doh… except that once it’s used up you have to buy more. Painting looks like loads of fun!

im gonna have to try the floam. Sounds great. We survive rainy days by going outside and playing in it. Chloe doesn’t seem to mind the raindrops on her head either.

My kids have totally been going stir crazy too with all the rain. we have a pass to the gateway museum it’s not too pricey for a year pass, and you can get in 4 or 6 people every time you go. Especially great when it gets over 100 degrees. which when it’s 50 in june you can’t believe will happen. It was nice too when we went to cali, we could go to there discovery museum FREE too!

Looks like a fun day. The boys have been asking me for finger paint, so maybe I better go get some! (They beg for the floam too . . .) :o)

LOL you guys are so cute! I LOVE your finger painting pictures … dang, they put mine to shame! 😉 I’m going to have to try and get some of that floam stuff … I haven’t been brave enough to get out the play dough again since last time the dog ingested a ton of it and Mason got some in his nose. UGH!
